My mother said it reminded her of "The Lottery" by shirley jackson. that is a scary statement. I think she just doesn't like dark endings, but real life has dark endings, i've found. And it isn't dark, just real.
I should probably add a disclaimer, saying that any antagonist's resemblance to any actual dean of any actual conservative private southern university that the actual author may actually attend, is actually purely coincidental in actuality, as this is actually a fictional creation of the author's actual mind.
